Our A.G.M. scheduled for 8th September was respectfully cancelled when the death of Queen Elizabeth was announced.
We will now hold a short Annual Meeting after the Harvest Supper on October 6th. The Treasurer will read her report and the election of Officers and Committee will take place.
Please contact us to book your supper (£7 on the night.) Subscriptions are also due now (£6). We will eat as soon as everyone has arrived.
Our Summer Show on 20th August was vey successful. We received almost 300 entries of a very good standard. Plenty of visitors enjoyed the display and stayed to have a go on the Tombola followed by tea and cake. A huge thankyou to all who helped set up the tables etc., served tea and of course to the exhibitors and Judges.
Our first Meeting after the Summer break will be our A.G.M. on 8th September. This will include a tribute to our greatly missed late President, Peter Read. His sons Mark and Adrian will be present with photos and scapbooks. They will also share their memories of their Dad.

Our Autumn programme starts on September 8th with the A.G.M. at St. Nicholas and St. Laurence School.
Membership is due on the night when the full year’s programme will be available. There will also be a chance to book your place at the Harvest Supper (October 6th).
Please remember to bring the Fuchsia and/or Geranium plants that we received from the Gold Club as plugs. These will be judged on the night.

A colourful border.
Here we are on the 2nd of July. Jubilee celebrations over and Wimbledon on the television. There is plenty to do in the garden, weeding, watering and, hopefully, harvesting early crops.

First of all, we are sad to hear that Joy Everington passed away on Sunday, 5th June. Joy was President of the Federation following many years as Treasurer and Secretary. She was also a well respected judge and will be missed. The Federation Chairman, Derek Tarrant, has shared this tribute with us;
Joy. My friend from Horticulture, a rather stern lady on the outside, but when you worked with her and talked of other things in life, it became a pleasure to know her.
The Dorset Federation of Horticultural Society would probably not be so well known, but for the tremendous amount of work Joy put in to it over many years. Finally and quite rightly, as a reward for all the work, became the President.
Her work as a Judge was second to none and she gave advice and knowledge to many others.
The horticultural world in the South and West is now a poorer place without her.
Thank You Joy.

On a happier note, The Jubilee Picnic was enjoyed by members on 2nd June, a lovely sunny afternoon in Immy and Bob Turner’s garden. Many thanks to them.

On Saturday 14th May we are holding our Plant Sale at Upwey and Broadwey Memorial Hall, Victoria Avenue at 2pm.
There is still time to book a table to sell your own plants ( 20% of takings go to the Society), or plants can be donated to the Society stall. We set up from 1pm. Ring 813942 or 814887.
The members’ Jubilee Picnic Tea will be held on Thursday, 2nd June. Ring for details.

For our May meeting, David Ennals gave a fascinating talk on Cacti. He brought along examples and showed us the difference between cacti and succulents. We were also told how to care for them correctly. Many questions from the room were answered in detail. An interesting talk delivered with humour.

May 5th – ‘Cacti and Succulents’ a talk by David Ennals. 7.30pm at the school.

Our April meeting was very interesting. Bob Turner gave us an excellent talk on the River Wey from its source to Weymouth harbour. He gave us a history of the river including the five working mills at Upwey, Broadwey, Nottington and two at Radipole. Two of them (Upwey and Radipole) now producing hydroelectricity. We were told about the past floods and the work done by the Environment Agency and the River Wey Society to alleviate future flooding. It is now a healthy river.
Two of our members entered the Dorset County Spring Show held at the new Jubilee Hall in Poundbury. Mark Read did very well with his daffodils and Shaun Vallard with some pot plants.
Our next Meeting will be on April 7th at St. Nicholas and St. Laurence School when Bob Turner will give us a talk entitled ‘A Walk Down the River Wey’, starting at 7.30pm.
Spring Show Report
Ready for Judging
Our Spring Show went ahead on Saturday the 18th. It was very well supported both by exhibitors and visitors. This was our first Spring Show since 2019 due to Covid so it was very pleasing to see that people still enjoy exhibiting.
The hall again looked lovely with all the beautiful Spring flowers and plants, floral arrangements, handicrafts and cookery items.

We were pleased to welcome three new exhibitors who all did well. The overall standard of exhibits was high and the number of entries similar to 2019.
Regular exhibitor, Bill Howarth, was surprised and delighted to win the major awards in the daffodil section. He also did well with his beautiful pots of hyacinths and tulips.
Arrangements are well in hand for the Spring Show on 19th March. Entries close on Wednesday 16th. They can be posted or phoned in to the Show Secretary or emailed to shows@budhs.org.uk. They can also be dropped off at Read’s Florist. Full details are in the schedule which can be downloaded from the ‘shows’ link. There will be the usual Tombola and teas will be served with delicious home-made cakes.

Meanwhile, the monthly meeting on Thursday 3rd March was very well attended. Steve Jeffries gave a very interesting and comprehensive talk on shrubs. The many questions from members added to the information given and the enjoyment of the evening.
The next meeting will be on Thursday 7th April, 7.30pm at the school. Bob Turner will give a talk entitled ‘A walk down the River Wey’. This promises to be very interesting.
Our February meeting took place on 3rd. Sara Harpley gave us an interesting and informative talk on photography. She gave us lots of useful tips on getting the best results from our cameras, including our mobile phones. She showed us examples of how to get the best composition, selecting the correct background and using the camera at the best angle. We should get some good photos in our Spring Show!
Our March meeting will be on 3rd March, 7.30pm at the school. Steve Jeffries will be telling us about shrubs and climbers. He is very knowledgeable so will be able to answer any questions members may have.
